December Birthdays

If you have a woman with a December birthday, it's time to think about a birthday gift. Birthstone jewelry is always a simple, classic option for women of all ages. There are three options for December birthstones in the US: Zircon, Tanzanite and Turquoise.

Gemstone: Zircon

Mineral: Zircon

Hardness: 6-7.5

Zircon comes in a variety of colors including red, yellow, green, and most commonly blue. Blue Zircon is known for its very high refractive index which gives the stone its incredible sparkle. It is important to note that Zircon is NOT the same as Cubic Zirconium. The synthetic mineral, cubic zirconium, is actually named after the mineral Zircon because of its brilliance. The gemstone was very popular in Victorian times and can be seen in estate jewelry dating back to the 1880s. Ancient legends claim that Zircon has the ability to induce sleep, drive away evil spirits and promote riches.

Gemstone: Tanzanite

Mineral: Zoisite

Hardness: 6-7

The bluish purple stone, Tanzanite, is relatively new to the gemstone world with its discovery in 1967. Tiffany & Co. brought the stone to prominence and became the primary distributor in 1968, naming the stone after the country from which it originates. It has remained a popular stone ever since, rivaling Ruby, Sapphire and Emerald at times.

Gemstone: Turquoise

Mineral: Turquoise

Hardness: 5-6

Turquoise is one of the worlds most ancient gemstones. It has been used throughout history in a variety of cultures by many different people. The stone is blue to green in color and is available in a large range of sizes. Turquoise was used heavily in the Southwest United States, and is still extremely popular in the area.

At Désideria, we are able to create unique, one of a kind pieces around any of these gemstones in virtually any size or price range. Email us at info@desideriacollection.com to inquire!
